LAUREN POPOWICH
Winner of the Sana Elache Community Engagement Award 2018
Lauren was born and raised in Bonnyville, Alberta, speaking English and French, and has been living in Fort McMurray for the past two years. She is enrolled in year 2 of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at Keyano College where she also plays with the Huskies on the Women’s Volleyball team. Lauren is actively involved in the community as last year she co-coached the Junior Huskies program, was a drop-in coach at Westwood High School and has recently taken on the role of coaching U14 Thunder Volleyball Club. With these contributions, she hopes to develop the future student-athletes of Keyano College. In the past year she has volunteered at Family Literacy Night at Good Shepard Elementary, Alberta Winter Games 2018, Staples Tools for School Campaign, Waypoints Take Back the Night and Homeless Connect. While she grew up in Bonnyville, she volunteered at her local church for non-profit Days for Girls which is a global movement that handcrafts feminine hygiene products for girls who are unable to attend school due to monthly periods. This is an organization Lauren plans to expand into Wood Buffalo in 2019.
