Human Rights Day

On December 10, 2022, the Multicultural Association of Wood Buffalo (in partnership with the RMWB, YMM Airport and MACOY) hosted a Human Rights Day Conversation Café to discuss the theme of the 74th UN Human Rights Day:

“Dignity, Freedom, and Justice for All”

The discussion featured a panel of 5 local Wood Buffalo residents, along with youth ambassadors from the Mayors Advisory Council on Youth.

There were also multicultural performances including a poetry reading by local Wood Buffalo residents Jamal E-Fatima Rafat and Miranda Beaton, as well as a videotaped dance performance put on by YMM Dance Company (featured below)

The United Nations’ Human Rights Day is observed on 10 December every year; a day to honour the UN’s adoption and proclamation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The Multicultural Association hosts an annual conference to educate members of the public on Human Rights in the context of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.

Human Rights Day acknowledges the entitled rights to everyone as a human being – regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth, or status. In 2022, the UN will be launching a year long campaign to promote and recognize the 75th anniversary of the UDHR, which falls on December 10, 2023.
